Chapter Eight

“Namaste.”

The class echoed their teacher’s blessing and Alex immediately started rolling up her mat. Jessica was quick to appear at her side, eyes narrowed. Alex had done a great job of showing up five minutes late to avoid the conversation she knew would ensue.

“So...what? You didn’t like him?” Her bright blue eyes were focused, the tiny witch seeming almost ten feet tall as her words weighed down on Alex.

“I...really didn’t.”

“Is this about Jayce? I know you’re still all hung up on him. It’s time to move on, girl. Nick can heal and stuff. He’s really...like...advanced in magic.”

“Why don’t you date him, then?”

“Because...well…”

“Exactly, Jessica.” Alex shrugged her yoga sling over one shoulder, tightening her black hair up in a messy bun.

Already the room was clearing out, everyone heading off to work. Alex was thinking more of a coffee. She had the next few days off after their last catch. Maybe more, depending on whether or not they got any word from the target’s family after Sheila reached out. If they had a better direction she would be on the hunt early.

It wasn’t like bounty hunting provided a retirement package, they needed that money as fast as possible.

“Well...I’m still going to find you the perfect guy. A warlock. Then we’ll basically be family. Cute little magical bear babies.”

“Cubs, and I eat my young. Probably not a good idea, Jess.”

“You. Do. Not.” She was laughing, though, eyes sparkling as she shook her head. “Alright, I better leave. But I’ll see you next week. I’ll bring the number of your next potential suitor.”

Without waiting for Alex to pipe back, Jessica was gone. Of course she was going to keep trying. From what Alex had picked up from Jessica, she wasn’t one to ever be deterred easily.

Alex made her way towards her car, waving at Jessica when she pulled out. She was alone in the parking lot, that warm South Carolina air all around her. Closing her eyes, Alex breathed it in, relaxing for a moment.

Her bear had been restless during yoga, desperate to get free, hating those moments of silence and relaxation.

The patter of feet caught her attention, whirling around as a dark shape sprinted towards her, large frame hidden under a black coat. She could barely catch his face, leaping to the side as he continued to race past her, wheeling towards the street, hands grasping for the air in front of him as though his life depended on it.

He stopped in the first lane, hands moving to reach his throat like he struggled to find air. Alex had regained her composure, feet starting up before she had a chance to stop them. She ran towards the man at full speed to help, to see what was wrong.

The man whirled around, eyes bulging as he clawed at his throat, veins popping in his neck, skin glowing a light white. White? A glow of magic that Alex picked up on but could not place. A familiar pulse. But instead of the normal calm, tingle of magic it seemed almost violent.
